ぱなしのはなし

This is a Japanese TV commercial for ecology — convserving energy.
Yes, she is really cute ( かわいい), but this video is not only good to watch a cute girl but also good to learn useful vacab. and grammar.
When I watched this TV commercial, first thing I thought was that this is a very good visual aid material for my students.
Let’s watch this video and pay attention what the girl keeps saying.

In this video the girl keeps saying ” ~ppanashi”, like “akeppanashi” “dashippanashi”…

Then, what’s the meaning of ” ~ppanashi” ?

*By adding ぱなし(=panashi) to a verb stem, you can describe something that has been left in a certain condition for some time.
Since the verb coming in front of はなし(=hanashi) should end with small っ(=tsu), we pronounce ぱ(=pa) instead of は(=ha)

eg:

ドアをあけっぱなしにする
doa o akeppanashini suru.
to leave the door open.

Lit. meaning is that you opened the door and didn’t close it and leave it open.

だしっぱなし= dashippanashi = to leave (water) running

つけっぱなし=tsukeppanashi = to leave the light /TV on.

**”~ppanashi” has another meaning as well.

Let’s compare the following 2 sentences.

1. たべっぱなしにしないで、ちゃんとおさらあらってね。
tabeppanashi ni shinaide chanto osara aratte ne

2. きのうのパーティではずっとたべっぱなしだったよ。
kinou no paatii dewa zutto tabeppanashi datta yo

#1 means ” Don’t leave the plate after you eat and wash it ”
#2 means ” I kept eating at the party yesterday “

So “ppanashi” has 2 different meanings and that is “leaves ~ ” and “keeps doing ~”

以上、ぱなしのはなしでした(^^)
